EXT.Seaside pier - NIGHT - 1930
The waves made a dull noise against the wooden piles at the pier. Night is low, a few dim street lamps illuminate the empty pier, more cold. Joe Coughlin was tied roughly to a huge concrete block, the cold water soaked his clothes, but he could not feel the cold, only deep fear and despair.
Diego Suarez: [Puts a gun in Joe's face] That's what you get for betraying your boss, son.
Joe Coughlin: [breathing hard, eyes full of anger and resentment] I didn't... I didn't betray anyone...
Diego Suarez: [sneers] And still tough? The boss is on to you. You think you can get away with this?
Diego Suarez spit on Joe and then shoved him to the ground. The weight of the cement blocks made Joe gasp and he tried in vain to get up.
Diego Suarez: [Raises pistol and points at Joe] Goodbye, Joe Coughlin.
Joe Coughlin closed his eyes in despair and waited for death to come.
INT. UNDERGROUND BAR - NIGHT - 1926 (FLASHBACK)
The dimly lit underground bar is thick with the smell of alcohol and tobacco. JOE COUGHLIN and DION O’BANION hide in a corner, observing the scene.
DION O’BANION
(whispering to Joe)
Look, that’s Albert White, the most ruthless mob boss in South Boston.
Albert White sits at the bar, surrounded by a group of scantily clad women. He is imposing, with piercing eyes that exude a chilling intimidation.
JOE COUGHLIN
(fixed on Albert, a hint of greed in his eyes)
He’s the target tonight?
DION O’BANION
(nodding)
Exactly. This guy’s bar is hiding a lot of valuable stuff.
JOE COUGHLIN
(licking his lips)
Let’s not waste time then. Quick and decisive.
Joe and Dion pull out their guns and rush towards the bar.
INT. UNDERGROUND BAR - NIGHT - 1926 (FLASHBACK)
The bar was in chaos, and the guests fled in panic. Joe Coughlin held Albert White at gunpoint while Dion O 'Banion restrained the other guests.
Joe Coughlin: [yelling at Albert White] Give me all the money!
That's when Joe Coughlin noticed a familiar figure. A woman in a long red dress was sitting in a corner, tastefully sipping champagne. She had curly blond hair and a charming twinkle in her turquoise eyes.
Joe Coughlin's inner os: Emma... Why is she here?
Emma Gould seemed to catch Joe Coughlin's eye, too, as she smiled and raised her glass to greet him.
Joe Coughlin was struck by Emma Gould's beauty and stood still for a moment.
Dion O 'Banion (nudging Joe Coughlin, whispering) : Don't stand still! Get the money!
Joe Coughlin recovered himself and forced himself to take his eyes off Emma Gould as he continued to collect Albert White's money.
Brenny Loomis: [Suddenly sprinting out from behind the bar with a dagger in his hand and stabbing Joe Coughlin] Don't move!
Joe Coughlin ducked and cut his shoulder with a dagger, leaving his shirt red with blood.
Joe Coughlin (clutching his wound, glaring angrily at Brenny Loomis) : Damn it!
Joe Coughlin was about to fire back when he froze. Because he recognized Brenny Loomis, who worked for Albert White.
Joe Coughlin Inner os: Brennan... Why is he here? Doesn't it... Albert White is...
A terrible thought crossed Joe Coughlin's mind when he realized he might be messing with the wrong person.
EXT. SEASIDE DOCK - NIGHT - 1930
Joe Coughlin’s thoughts are pulled back to reality by the sound of the waves. He stares at the dark muzzle of the gun, knowing he has nowhere to escape.
JOE COUGHLIN (V.O.)
If I hadn’t walked into that bar, if I hadn’t met Emma… would my life be different?
Diego Suarez pulls the trigger.
